John McCarthy is Professor of Computer Science and Director of the
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Stanford University. His scientific
interest include artificial intelligence (making computer programs behave
intelligently), mathemtically proving properties of computer programs,
man-computer interaction, the use of computers in homes, symbolic
computation and social opportunities provided by new technology. He
originated the LISP programming language, the concept of time-sharing
whereby one computer can give each of a large number of users the effect
of a private computer, and many concepts in artificial intelligence and
mathematical theory of computation. McCarthy has been active in the
politics of maintaining an adequate energy supply and is a board member of
Scientists and Engineers for Secure Energy.
